About Us

About the Society Windsor & Districts’ Historical Society Inc servicing the old Windsor Town Council areas of Albion, Alderley, Bowen Bridge,Eagle Junction*, Eildon, Kalinga, Kedron*, Lutwyche, Maida Hill,.Newmarket*,and now extended to cover Herston. (*part of this suburb.) Housed in the historic old Windsor Council Chambers, the Society maintains displays of articles and equipment used in the locality, for example stonemason tools, a cash register and baskets from the local laundry etc. It also houses a small library of local books and a photographic collection and display. The Society is housed in unique heritage listed stone local government building (The Windsor Shire/ Town Chambers) built in 1897 out of Brisbane Tuff mined on site. The Society maintains a large photographic display of the history of the area. The collection includes photographs of early settlers, historic homes and schools. A large collection of family and other local resource files has been established including selected Post Office Directories, Electoral Rolls and over eighty Real Estate maps from 1870s to 1920s. Complete listings of council members have been compiled and the Mayor’s Chair used up to 1925 in the main chambers is a featured display. A reference listing of over 27 000 burials at Lutwyche Cemetery is available for researchers. The museum collection contains stonemason’s tools, local bottles and bricks from famous houses and local brickyards. Adjoining the Chambers are the Windsor War Memorial and Windsor Town Quarry Parks. Events The Society is responsible for the district Anzac Day Service (9 am) each year. The Society also conducts a yearly history walk on the last Sunday in July.
