Brisbane Taxi Subsidy Scheme

The taxi subsidy scheme is an initiative of Queensland Transport's Public Transport Division. It aims to improve the mobility of persons with severe disabilities. The service is controlled by the Department of Transport, provided by Home and Community Care (HACC) and jointly funded by State and Federal Governments. To be eligible to participate in the Taxi Subsidy Scheme you must have a severe permanent or temporary disability and be a permanent resident of Queensland. The application will be assessed by Queensland Health on one of the following criteria: 1. Physical disability requiring dependence on a wheelchair for all mobility outside the home. 2. Severe ambulatory problem that cannot functionally be improved and restricts walking to an extremely limited distance. 3. Total loss of vision or severe visual impairment. 4. Severe and uncontrollable epilepsy with seizures involving loss of consciousness. 5. Intellectual disability resulting in the need to be accompanied by another person at all times for travel on public transport. 6. Severe emotional and/or behaviour disorders with a level of disorganisation resulting in the need to be accompanied by another person at all times for travel on public transport. Travel costs half the prescribed taxi fare, the maximum subsidy is $25 per trip. In addition to conventional taxis, vehicles specially modified to accept wheelchairs are available.
